Josh Spindler is a Brighton based British multimedia artist and filmmaker known for his work that explores environmental and societal themes. He gained significant recognition for his short film Margaret Gallagher is real, which won the Grand Prize at the Nikon Photo Contest 2022 - 2023 and secured him a place in the CIRCA x DAZED Class of 2021, with the piece being shown on the largest public screens in London, Tokyo and Seoul. The film examines the climate crisis through the off-grid life of the titular women. It suggests that living more simply or ‘withdrawing’ could help address global environmental challenges.
Spindler’s work has also been involved exhibitions all over the world, including moving image, animation and photography pieces. His pieces like I Transform for You and Seeking the Sun, They Found Oblivion, have been recognised in international competitions and his short films have been shown across the UK, Japan and Switzerland, to name a few. His most recent documentary ‘Blanks & Tabs’ premiered at the London Independent Film Festival 2024 at Genesis Cinema, Bethnal Green.
His eclectic lens based practice helps him in his current objective which is to find and tell the stories that matter that when filtered through his conceptual practice create emotional, honest and empathetic works of art that will cause the audience to question their own place in the world. Whatever the idea, Spindler finds the best process and technique to produce his trademark take on the magic in the mundane that we are all a part of, all of the time.
